A business card that makes the next step clear

Use a readable contact route and a tested print proof instead of trying to fit an entire website on a card.

A useful way through

  1. Decide the next action. A person should know whom they met and how to continue the conversation. Choose the relevant name, role or organisation and an approved public contact route. Remove information that is private or unnecessary for that purpose.
  2. Ask the printer for the actual template and production requirements. Build the design at the intended dimensions. Check type, contrast and spacing in a real-size proof; enlarging the artwork on a screen can hide reading problems.
  3. If you add a QR code, keep a readable destination or contact route as an alternative. Test the printed code with ordinary devices and verify the destination. Avoid sending readers through an account or a temporary link they do not need.
  4. Approve the wording and print sample together. Check spelling, contact details, destination ownership and any front/back alignment. Record the approved artwork version and quantity. Recheck the contact route before a later reprint.

THE NEXT ACTION SHOULD BE EASY TO FIND · YOUR NAME · Relevant role / purpose · One public contact route → · QR optional. A readable alternative remains. · Proof at real size. Test the printed destination.

Put it into practice

A fictional maker wants enquiries about commissions. The card uses the maker’s name, “Paper commissions” and one public contact page, with a QR code as a second route. A real-size proof reveals that a long social handle is difficult to read. Removing the redundant handle improves the intended task without claiming a measured increase in enquiries.

Illustrative example, not a reported client project or test.

Your take-away checklist

A business card that makes the next step clear

  • □ Name and relevant role: ____________________
  • □ One clear contact route: ____________________
  • □ Readable print proof: ____________________
  • □ Tested destination and approval: ____________________

Before you act

Card dimensions, bleed and print tolerances depend on the printer. A successful scan on a screen does not prove that the printed code works. Do not add fabricated affiliations, qualifications or addresses.

The five-minute proof review

Read it without zooming; type the contact route manually; scan the printed code; confirm the correct page; ask another person what action the card suggests. Write down any ambiguity before approving.

Keep a reprint note

Store the artwork version, printer specification, approved sample and contact-route owner together. A beautiful obsolete telephone number is still an obsolete contact route.
