Read a sink drawing without mistaking outside size for cut-out size

Prepare a complete question sheet for the fabricator and supplier, while keeping installation dimensions tied to their exact product documentation.

Follow the task

  1. Identify the exact product

Record the model, configuration and the drawing revision supplied for it. Keep a generic shop photograph separate from the dimensional document. Similar-looking bowls may belong to different models or mounting arrangements.

  2. Name the different dimensions

Separate overall outside size, bowl dimensions, supplier requirements for the cabinet and the specified cut-out/template. Copy the terminology used in the actual document. Never derive a cutting line by subtracting an invented margin from an overall dimension.

  3. List interacting components

Ask about the worktop, taps, accessories, plumbing and anything else the actual supplier or fabricator needs to confirm. Record which party resolves each issue. A model’s advertised width does not establish compatibility with the whole cabinet or worktop assembly.

  4. Approve the document trail

Have the responsible professional confirm the exact template, product and agreed scope before fabrication. Preserve the revision that was approved. If the model changes, treat the previous approval as needing review rather than silently reusing its dimensions.

A worked example

A fictional quotation calls a sink “800 mm overall”. The buyer’s record leaves the cut-out field unfilled because no manufacturer template has been supplied. The fabricator requests the full model code and the correct template. That is a complete next action; turning 800 mm into a guessed cutting width would not be a valid completion.

Illustrative example, not a reported purchase, client project or product test.

Keep the distinction clear

A drawing can contain several visually similar rectangles representing different boundaries. Label them in the record, and keep units visible. This distinction lets a non-specialist ask a precise question without pretending to specify the work. It also prevents a change of accessory or mounting style from disappearing inside a generic “sink included” line.

Where this guide stops

No cutting, plumbing, support, sealant or installation instructions. Use the exact manufacturer template and the responsible professional.
