A useful way through
- Define the reader and the finished format. Keep a manuscript revision, an editorial review plan and a permissions record for text and images. Decide what the book needs to help the reader do. Do not use promised income as the acceptance test for a manuscript.
- Choose the actual printer or distribution route and read its current specifications. Trim size, bleed, margins and cover dimensions depend on that route and the final page count. Prepare the interior and cover as related files; changing one can affect the other.
- Inspect a digital preview and, where available and appropriate, a physical proof. Check page order, running text, images, headings, blank pages, cover and binding-related details. Keep a correction log with page, issue, change and verification status.
- Freeze an approved edition. Record the interior and cover versions, approval date, production specifications and any identifier assigned through the chosen route. Submit the approved pair, then check the resulting listing and sample. Preserve corrections for a later edition instead of silently losing the record.

Put it into practice
An illustrative 120-page booklet is proofed as interior-v05.pdf with cover-v03.pdf. A correction adds two pages. The publisher checks whether the chosen production route requires a revised cover template, exports a new interior, reviews both files together and records a new approved pair. The old proof is evidence of an earlier version, not approval of the changed book.
Illustrative example, not a reported client project or test.

Before you act
Costs, identifiers, rights, tax and distribution terms depend on the actual country and service. Read the relevant current terms and obtain appropriate advice where needed. The earlier article’s earnings claims are not a forecast for this project.
A correction log you can reuse
Page or location; observed issue; proposed change; responsible person; file revision; check performed; status. Keep a proof correction distinct from a new chapter so the scope and production impact are visible.
Before pressing publish
Can you identify the exact approved interior and cover? Are third-party materials cleared for the intended use? Has someone checked the listing and reader-facing description against the actual book? If one answer is unknown, resolve it before presenting the edition as ready.
