A retail design brief that contractors can actually quote

Before choosing a retail designer, describe what must happen in the space. A beautiful portfolio cannot tell you whether the proposal includes the stockroom, lighting specification or installation supervision.

A material choice starts with the room and a clear brief.

A useful way through

  1. Walk the customer route from entrance to payment. Mark a place to pause, a place to compare and a place to ask for help. Keep access and emergency requirements for a qualified local professional to verify.
  2. Write a room-by-room scope: survey, concept, drawings, purchasing, contractor coordination and handover. Ask the designer to mark each item included, optional or excluded.
  3. Give each shortlisted designer the same brief, measured plan and budget boundary. Request itemised fees, deliverables, revisions and assumptions.
  4. Compare the proposals on the same basis. Clarify who measures, who approves substitutions and who owns the final drawing files before agreeing the work.

Put it into practice

For a small bookshop, a brief might ask for movable display tables, a queue that does not block browsing, and storage for delivery boxes. Proposal A includes two concepts and drawings; B includes only a moodboard. Their headline fees cannot be compared until B prices the missing drawings.

Illustrative example, not a reported client project or test.

Your take-away checklist

Before you act

Ask for one comparable completed project and the specific role the designer performed. A photograph alone does not establish responsibility for the whole project.
