Commission a custom figurine without an ambiguous brief

A small commissioned object still needs a clear specification. Give the maker a shared reference for appearance, scale and approval before production starts.

A useful way through

  1. Describe the object and its intended use: display, a gift or another purpose. Confirm with the maker whether the proposed material is suitable; a decorative object is not automatically a toy.
  2. Prepare reference views you are entitled to share. Specify the features that matter and distinguish an approximate interpretation from an exact reproduction request.
  3. Agree dimensions, base, finish and the stages at which a proof can be changed. Ask what is included in the price and what triggers an additional charge.
  4. Confirm packing, delivery, handling instructions and the process for reporting damage. Keep the approved proof with the final order.

Put it into practice

A desk figurine brief could ask for a 12 cm display object on a plain base, with the pose approved before painting. A proof approved only from the front would not settle the appearance of the back.

Illustrative example, not a reported client project or test.

Before you act

Do not assume a maker can copy another artist’s protected character or design. Resolve permissions and the agreed interpretation before commissioning.
