Work

Check an electrical-work quote against the actual licence scope

Match the named contractor, the permitted work and the written quote before treating a licence image as an answer.

MichaelT editorial23 October 2026

Start with the work, not a reassuring label

Write a plain description of the requested work and its location. Separate an appliance enquiry from building wiring, a new installation from investigation of a fault, and the organisation taking your money from the individual expected to attend. You are preparing questions for a competent contractor, not diagnosing a circuit or deciding what electrical work you can do yourself. Avoid publishing an address or photographs that expose security details.

Find the regulator for that location

Use the official authority for the place where the work will occur. As a specific Australian example, Service NSW provides a contractor-licence check with searches by name, number, type and business identifiers. Match the result to the party on the quote and read the actual licence details. A trade-association membership, neighbouring business name or screenshot with no date does not complete this comparison. Requirements elsewhere must be checked with the relevant authority.

Ask about the gap between the record and the quote

Keep three things side by side: the work requested, the licence information found, and the contractor’s explanation of how the proposed work falls within it. If names or permissions differ, ask for clarification through a verified contact route. Do not treat a broad phrase such as commercial specialist or Level 2 as a universal international authorisation. Record unresolved questions as unresolved rather than ticking a general qualified box.

Agree the next approval point

The quote should identify what is included, what is excluded, the basis of any investigation charge and who may approve additional work. Ask which completion documents apply to the actual job. Keep the dated quote and relevant registry reference privately. A registry match is one part of an enquiry; it is not MichaelT inspecting the installation, endorsing a supplier or guaranteeing the job.

Work through an example

A fictional studio requests an investigation of intermittent lighting. The quote names Firm A, while the supplied image names Person B. The organiser records both names and asks the firm to explain the relationship and the authorisation relevant to this location. The investigation price is kept separate from any later repair. No permission or successful repair is assumed while the answer is pending.

Illustrative example; figures, people and organisations in the worked record are fictional.

Keep your own record

Use the result within its scope

An unanswered scope question is a reason to seek clarification before agreeing to work. Do not convert the worksheet into an electrical inspection or a wiring tutorial. Use the official authority and a suitably authorised professional for the actual circumstances.
