Identify the installed material
Find the supplier or installation record for the actual surface and finish. Keep an unverified trade name separate from a documented stone type. The Natural Stone Institute explains that composition affects appropriate care. A glossy photograph or the everyday word marble is not enough to identify every material. Do not perform a scratch or acid test to fill the record.
Describe the mark and context
Record where the mark appears, when it was noticed and what happened beforehand if known. Separate a visible stain, dull patch or residue from a diagnosis of its cause. Use an ordinary safe photograph with a location reference, without staging a spill. An unknown cause should remain unknown rather than becoming proof that a supplier installed the wrong product.
List products already applied
Keep the actual cleaner name, label and how it was used under the existing instructions. Tell the specialist about previous products rather than layering another treatment over an unknown residue. Do not mix cleaners or apply a household acid, abrasive or solvent based on a generic article. A product’s suitability depends on the actual surface and instructions, not just the promise of a shine.
Ask for a compatible next step
Send the relevant material record and observations through the maker’s or competent specialist’s appropriate route. Ask which current care instruction applies and what limitations or professional assessment are needed. Keep the dated answer for later care. This page does not prescribe a stain-removal recipe, polishing method or procedure for a damaged worktop.
Read the drawing as text
Material, observation and prior products support a specific care enquiry. None alone justifies a universal cleaning recipe.
Work through an example
A fictional counter record names finish F but has no confirmed stone type. A dull area D appeared after an unidentified cleaner. The owner records both uncertainties and asks the supplier for the material and appropriate care instructions. The worksheet does not label D as a particular chemical damage or recommend another product.
Illustrative example; figures, people and organisations in the worked record are fictional.

Keep your own record
Use the result within its scope
Use appropriate professional guidance and the actual manufacturer’s instructions. A precise enquiry is useful without attempting an irreversible cleaning experiment.
