Verify who will attend
Keep the business identity, independently checked contact route and the location of the intended service in a private record. Ask who will actually perform the work and how their identity will be confirmed on arrival. Do not publish the property’s access details or lock identifiers. The linked Master Locksmiths Association guidance concerns the UK; its description of local licensing is not a worldwide rule.
Ask what the first price includes
Separate attendance, assessment, labour, parts, taxes and any out-of-hours element. Record whether a quoted amount is a fixed price, starting price or estimate and which conditions may change it. Ask what would still be payable if you decline further work. Avoid treating an advertisement’s lowest number as the final cost for an unassessed problem.
Agree the approval boundary
Ask the provider to explain the proposed work and a revised written amount before chargeable changes proceed, using the actual agreement and local requirements. Keep any permitted limit or scope explicit. This sheet supplies no entry methods, lock-bypass instructions or advice to damage hardware. It also does not establish who has legal authority over the property; the provider must use its appropriate verification process.
Keep a completion record
Retain the invoice, actual parts and work description, relevant care or warranty information and the contact route for a problem. Compare them with what was authorised. If there is a dispute, use appropriate local consumer guidance. A receipt or membership logo alone does not guarantee quality, accreditation, a particular remedy or the necessity of every proposed replacement.
Read the drawing as text
Attendance and a later repair proposal are separate commitments; record the change before treating the work as authorised.
Work through an example
A fictional callout quotation lists attendance A, with any repair separately assessed. After arrival the provider proposes part P. The customer asks for the complete revised scope and price before deciding. The record shows attendance acknowledged but repair not yet authorised; it contains no door code, address or technique for opening a lock.
Illustrative example; figures, people and organisations in the worked record are fictional.
