Read caravan mass documents without approving a towing combination

Keep manufacturer ratings, the exact vehicle combination and actual loaded measurements in separate fields before seeking a competent assessment.

MichaelT editorial24 October 2026

Identify both sides of the combination

Record the exact towing vehicle and trailer or caravan, with relevant manufacturer documents and fitted coupling information. Keep modifications and unknown identifiers visible for professional clarification. A destination photograph, a product name or the word off-road does not identify a permissible towing combination. Use the responsible authority’s current rules for the actual location and driver.

Keep each rating attached to its subject

NSW guidance asks users to consider vehicle, trailer, coupling and combination limits. Copy the actual labels and definitions rather than treating one headline towing capacity as the answer to every constraint. A maximum rating is not the measured weight of a loaded item. Ask a competent professional about unclear abbreviations and the applicable manufacturer information; do not invent a missing limit.

Distinguish loading evidence from an estimate

Retain the date, configuration and scope of any actual competent measurement. A brochure’s unladen figure does not describe every later load, accessory or changed configuration. This worksheet does not teach loading, hitch adjustment or weighing and does not calculate a legal payload. If evidence is missing, record not measured rather than subtracting convenient numbers to approve a journey.

Ask for the combination-specific answer

Provide the relevant documents through a verified professional route and ask which limits and checks apply together. Keep driver restrictions, registration and the intended journey as separate questions. A campsite booking or the fact that each vehicle is registered does not settle the whole towing assessment. Follow the appropriate manufacturer, professional and authority instructions before use.

Rated maximum and actual mass differ: Each fictional component retains its own rating. Actual loaded configuration and the combination assessment cannot be inferred from a single brochure figure.

Work through an example

A fictional file identifies vehicle V, caravan C and coupling H. A brochure contains one rating, while the actual loaded measurement for the intended configuration is missing. The organiser records that gap and asks a competent assessor for the applicable checks. No real masses are supplied and no subtraction is used to declare that the combination may be towed.

Illustrative example; figures, people and organisations in the worked record are fictional.

Keep your own record

Use the result within its scope

Keep the scope exact. This is a document-reading aid, not towing training, a load calculation or permission to use a vehicle combination. Apply current local rules and competent advice to the real equipment and journey.
