Distinguish an account balance from funds available to withdraw

Read the platform’s actual balance definitions and hold notice before assuming that a displayed total can be transferred.

MichaelT editorial24 October 2026

Name each displayed balance

Record the platform, account context, date and the exact balance labels shown in its official interface. Total balance, buying power and available withdrawal balance may answer different questions. Do not use an old exchange review or a retired product’s help page as the current account instructions. This worksheet needs neutral references rather than account credentials, wallet keys or screenshots containing personal information.

Read the specific restriction

Use the current official explanation and the account’s actual notice to identify whether a deposit hold, pending transaction or another stated restriction applies. Coinbase’s funds-on-hold guidance is one platform-specific example of funds usable in one context but unavailable for withdrawal. Do not transfer its timing or rules to another platform, funding method, account or jurisdiction. Ask the verified provider about an unexplained difference.

Reconcile only comparable figures

For an arithmetic illustration, subtract a specifically identified held amount from a total on the same unit and time basis. Keep fees, unsettled trades and other constraints separate if the real account uses them. A neat subtraction cannot prove that the remaining amount will be withdrawable. Follow the provider’s actual definitions instead of assuming every unavailable balance is one simple hold.

Keep custody and transfer evidence separate

Save the official explanation, enquiry reference and actual response through secure private records. A helpdesk acknowledgement is not release of funds, and a displayed available balance is not proof of an executed transfer. Never send credentials or recovery phrases to someone promising to remove a hold. This page supplies no trading, wallet-connection or transfer instructions.

A total is not a transfer receipt: The fictional total splits into 20 held units and 80 outside that hold. Other conditions and actual transfer evidence remain separate.

Work through an example

A fictional screen shows total 100 units and a specifically identified deposit hold of 20 units. In the simplified example, 100 − 20 = 80 units remain outside that hold. Whether those 80 units are actually withdrawable still depends on the platform’s other applicable conditions. No hold duration, real account access, completed withdrawal or investment outcome is asserted.

Illustrative example; figures, people and organisations in the worked record are fictional.

Keep your own record

Use the result within its scope

Use current platform records for the actual account. This record cannot establish solvency, recover money, recommend an exchange or guarantee that a withdrawal will complete.
